I create compelling, intelligent user experiences, expressed through beautiful user interfaces. I have over 15 years of multi-disciplinary design experience. Previously, I was Art Director for several digital agencies in the UK & Europe; a Creative Director for Enext an award-winning online & print magazine, collecting two Webby Awards and 'featured designer' recognition on Béhance. Recently I have helped BigThink.com scale to 4M monthly visits, and Stone Clinic increase monthly visits from < 3k per month to over 200k — at times exceeding their patient capacity. With Now Labs I worked alongside Panasonic to ideate and prototype a multi-million dollar cloud service.
I've spent the last 6 years partnering with agencies, fortune 1000's, and startups in San Francisco with a long-arc approach to product design strategy, design research, user experience, user interface, visual design, and contemporary front-end development frameworks & process.
As business strategy and design leadership become increasingly indivisible, the silos of IA, UX, UI, IxD, visual design, marketing, and analytics are crumbling. As leaders we have a responsibility to understand, apply and communicate the cross-functional ‘generalist’ philosophy of design. I have many years of leadership/management experience, journeying from production artist to art director to creative director to design director, so one of my core interests is providing mentorship for young (and often frustrated) designers—I was trained and mentored well, and wish to return the favor. In 2010 I was invited into the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS) and participate annually as a judge for the Webby Awards.
I have experience in many creative fields: print, motion, interaction, and user experience. I have extensive knowledge of Adobe CC and Sketch. I am a connoisseur of fast prototyping tools and techniques (UXPin, InvisionApp, Zeplin, Webflow). I have a strong working knowledge of HTML/CSS/JS, low & high fidelity progression, design specs, documentation, preparation of developer-ready artwork and digital artifacts. I have driven design strategy, audits & research, stakeholder and customer interviews, established user experience goals, user-stories and user-flows. I have developed responsive systems with a scalable component approach, for a variety of environments, devices and resolutions.
I have boundless curiosity for the intersection of science, technology and culture, with deep industry knowledge of web, media, and communication. I'm an autodidact with an eclectic (yet professional) design background. I grew up in the UK, worked in London and Stockholm in my 20s before moving to the US. When not actively designing I'm passionate about cross disciplinary discourse with a rag-tag network of co-conspirators and friends; scientists, musicians, mathematicians, anthropologists, philosophers etc.
